Godspeed, Mrs. Shields |
||||
Thank You Mrs. Shields
Mrs. Sylvan Shields, who has been with Belair since 1968, has retired. Over the past 30 years she has touched the lives of literally thousands of Belair students. She served in various positions at the school including principal of the Prep school, teacher, High School Principal and finally Director of Belair School. Following are memories of Mrs. Shields, submitted by our Alumni

Michael R. Douglas - Class of '86"During assembly in Prep School, I was engaged in serious playtime with my friends Geoffrey Myrie, Randolph Anderson and Bert Welsh when, unexpectedly, Mrs. Shields called each of us by name to step forward where she scolded us for not behaving.To this day, the stern voice of Mrs. Shields is still entrenched in my mind and I have just managed (I think) not to cringe when I hear the voice anymore. Mrs. Shield's departure will be a great loss for Belair. When you drive by the school and see it leaning to one side, you know that the Belair building has lost one of its four corners in its foundations." Michael R. Douglas Class of '86 michael.douglas@citicorp.com
Geoffrey Myrie - Class of 1986"Mrs. Shields has always been a pillar of support for me while I was in Prep school. She held the position of Principal with dignity, but never over-powered people with her authority. I have a great deal of respect for her now as I did before. She is a caring, unselfish lady who has truly been an icon for me during my early school years. I wish you a healthy and fulfilling retirement Mrs. Shields, you have done excellently."Geoffrey Myrie Class of 1986 Geoffrey.Myrie@RFBinder.com
Kathleen Carvalho (Stirrat) - Class of 1979"What I remember the most about Mrs. Shields...Her smile and warmness, yet firmness!! I remember walking through the "forbidden hallway" (where Mrs. Shield's office was then) from the prep school to the high school. She met me in the hallway and I was "terrified" at my wrongdoing. Her smile and "It's okay" attitude, but "this is not to be a habit all right?" made me (a little child) very happy. Younger people may not understand the discipline back then the world hadn't quite grasped the importance of "a child's world." But, Mrs. Shield's did. She did her very best to make the little ones feel good. Administration-wise (against all odds...I believe there were many "odds" for her, in very many respects) she conquered it all. I remember Kathy Shields (in my class) in prep school...brilliant to the point of annoying! and playing "Jacks" and a good friend! Wish you had stayed longer. I guess I was a bit jealous because "your Mummy" was the Headmistress!Thank you Mrs. Shield's for being a smiling, warm, positive force in my life (as well as the discipline)." Jeff Spicer - Class of 1977"I'm sorry to hear you are leaving and I suppose have to own up to a small truth...IT WAS me and Fuzzy who took the pencils and a small amount of change out of the pencil boxto satisfy our lust for Milk Chocolate and French Fries smothered in tomato ketchup! Always remember you, love and best wishes for the future." Jeff Spicer Class of 1977 Back to Newsletter Home Page
