DESPERATELY SEEKING...
Well, Tom Grasse was desperately seeking "Duppy"
and, sadly, learned of Duppy's fate. Thanks to Roxanne Hosein (Class of
"87) and Suzanne O'Sullivan, I now know where Duppy is - Heaven.
Roxanne wrote;
Duppy met a very sad end in about 1992-3 (not sure of the exact time)
It was right after I moved back to Jamaica with my son after 9 years in
Florida. He was still walking with that large, hard foot turned to the
side and dragging as he always had. I remembered exclaiming to my son
that that was Duppy and that he had been around since I was my son's age.
Within about two weeks, Duppy was found dead behind a dumpster in Mandeville
plaza, seeming bashed in the head by a rock.
It is uncertain what the circumstances are behind it
but the more popular speculation is that it was done by another mad man.
Very sad. I would say that more Mandeville people knew who Duppy was than
knew who the custos or the Mayor was (at least Duppy was constant). In
all his years, he had never hurt anyone.
And, this about Duppy from Suzanne O'Sullivan (Class
of "85)
I don't know if you've received any replies about this yet and I hate
to be the bearer of bad news. Duppy, unfortunately, was killed about 2-3
years ago. Apparently he was sleeping in the square by the courthouse
and some truly horrible person took a concrete building block and dropped
it on his head. Not what you wanted to hear, I'm sure. His funeral was
HUGE - it seemed like the entire town turned out to pay their last respects.
Like you said, everyone knew in Mandeville knew him!
