To the Editor,I am a graduate of the 1986 Class who was recently led to understand that Belair High has gone public. I was appalled at this news and realized the steady decline in the quality of education at Belair has now hit rock bottom. Surely in an idealistic sense it would be fair to say that going public is a good thing, providing a sound education for poorer deserving students. But if the word "public" maintains it's reputation and association with government policies and priorities, then the idealistic belief stated before will remain just that, a belief. The Jamaican Government has not prioritized education with the significance and urgency it deserves. To think that now the faculty and policies of this high school will now become a part of the misconstrued, excuse-laced system of Jamaican Government educational deficiencies, fuels rage and disappointment. I may be blowing this out of proportion, there may still be vested private interests in the institution. Please let me know if there will be fund-raisers or scholarship programs to which I can contribute. Thank you. Geoffrey Myrie - Class of 1986 Geoffrey.Myrie@RFBinder.com
